Introduction

Hi everyone,

I’m Xuan Qin and I go by Amy. It is very nice to meet you all and take EMPR 200 together this semester. I’m majoring in Film and Media and this is my fourth year of my undergraduate at Queen’s. My interest lies in many different aspects in digital media, such as video production, graphic design, and digital media studies. My work so far encompasses short narrative films, documentary, video essay, banner design, brochure design, and photography. I wish to engage with art curatorship and digital productions in the field of branding and marketing in my career.  

Upon my graduation, it is necessary and very important for me to think about my career and learn about the overall working space and employment relations in Canada. Working and studying at school are two different experiences and having basic knowledge about what I’m heading into after graduation could be very helpful. It is one of the major reasons that inspired my interest in taking this course. Another reason that influence my choice of taking this class is that this could provide some inspiration for my future productions and insights of employment relations in Canada. There is a great potential of developing a documentary along with further future interdisciplinary research about Canada’s labour market, human resources management, labour policies and many other aspects that are covered in this course.

    I’m Hyunny and I’m so excited to be working with you this semester. WOW!! Film and Media? That’s amazing and I do believe that EMPR 200 will help you a lot aside from Film and Media, but also in the workplace of your program. Your choices for taking this course really inspired me. You seem to have a lot of interest in several areas of the world and I really look up to that!!

    Great job setting up your blog for EMPR 200! I really enjoyed your introductory post, as it provided a snapshot into your interests and background as you come into this course. Thank you for sharing about your work!
    Its so interesting that you’re approaching the study of Employment Relations from a digital media and artistic perspective. There are so many areas wherein these fields overlap – from the legal question of whether independent contractors (which filmmakers often are) can unionize (and what employment protections they are entitled to), to the ways in which documentary filmmakers and artists have explored aspects of employment relations in Canada (check out the film Final Offer for more on this), there is so much to explore.
    I hope you enjoy this course, and I look forward to reading future posts on your blog!
